A dialogue between the Wise Men and the Shepherds. A quiet carol for strings and choir with optional flute and handbells (one player). Chorus may be divided into two antiphonal SATB sections, or the carol may be sung by a single chorus. King Herod shouts in the middle, otherwise pizzicato strings, lyrical violin solo, and an E major night song. The piano/organ reduction includes parts for optional violin and handbells. Duration under 3 minutes.
The Wise Men:
Soft, oh soft, the night so bright, so still:
Silent the shepherds watch from their hill.
The Shepherds:
The Star is still shining on Bethlehem.
Hush, the baby is sleeping.
The Shepherds:
Why, oh why, yon bright and silent star
Leading you over the land so far?
The Wise Men:
We follow star and a manger seek,
To find the baby there sleeping.
All:
FIND THAT BABY NOW, King Herod said.
FIND AND END IT NOW, King Herod said.
BRING THE BABY HERE, BRING THAT BABE,
I WILL END HIS INFANT KINGDOM,
BRING THAT BABY BOY!
The Shepherds:
Wise men ride along the starlit way,
Finding the manger with breaking day.
The Wise Men:
We give our gifts to the newborn king.
All:
Hush, the angels are singing.
